But for the actions of a reckless driver nearly hitting Mr. Pond and his family, there would be no incident. The entrepreneur was in Telluride last October with his family for a wedding. When he and his family were walking back to their hotel, a woman driving in excess of the speed limit veered towards Mr. Pond, his wife, and their two small children—her car coming within two feet of them and frightening the family. This new Hudson House straddles the line between West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, and is situated doors down from the Soho House and the new Lavo Ristorante. That’s good news for the Hollywood Hills set that has been clamoring for more nearby eats — hence incoming projects like the redone La Dolce Vita, Jon & Vinny’s Beverly Hills, and Maple & Ash steakhouse. A big Texas hospitality outfit is the next to land a hotspot in the Beverly Hills area, with plans to bring the party right to the far western edge of the Sunset Strip. Vandelay Hospitality Group out of Dallas is set to open Hudson House this summer, as part of a larger expansion into the Southern California market.

Frankly it’s surprising that the group hasn’t already jumped to Los Angeles, as several of its projects carry very LA names. There’s Brentwood, a home for classic Americana, and Drake’s Hollywood, complete with lounge-y food and live jazz. The group already has multiple Hudson House locations across Texas as well, with another slated for Houston soon. Separately, an arrest warrant was issued this month in Colorado for Vandelay’s CEO, Hunter Pond, on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and harassment related to an October incident. When reached for comment, Eater LA received a statement from Jason H. Friedman, an attorney for Pond and Vandelay Hospitality Group, responding to the lawsuit and warrant.

Starting January 30, Hudson House is open Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. Overall it’s an unfussy and familiar menu serving traditional American fare. Of course, there’s a fish of the day along with crab cake and maple-plank salmon.

Sunset Strip welcomes Dallas-based restaurant chain with East Coast flair

Hudson House (not to be confused with Hudson House in Redondo Beach) is a small restaurant chain from Dallas with a loose East Coast seafood theme going on. Their newest location on Sunset in Weho gives off old-school New York bistro energy, and we’d recommend it to anyone in need of a solid Happy Hour. The swanky dining room is filled with dark-wood surfaces, blue leather booths, and the musical stylings of Frank Sinatra.

Johansson’s long blonde tresses were tucked behind her ears in a sharp center part and styled in classic Hollywood-inspired waves. Starting Monday, Hudson House will be open for service daily from noon-3 p.m. And 5 p.m.-closing, with weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Vandelay founder Hunter Pond says he's excited to offer an East Coast-inspired concept on the menu, which features healthy Californian diets and seafood options while satisfying our inner-foodie's occasional need for quality decadence.

Subsequently, at their hotel, Mr. Pond saw the same woman stopping in front of his hotel and exiting her vehicle. Fresh oysters are flown in daily and they offer seven different kinds of martinis. The kitchen here is churning out the classic dishes you'd expect from any American bar and grill—think cheeseburgers and crab cakes—but the results are pretty pricey and boring. If you’re nearby and want to check it out anyway, head straight to the bar on a weekday between 3-6pm for discounted martinis and oysters. The Texas group’s Hudson House is a kind of laid-back ode to East Coast upscale casual dining, complete with cold martinis, oysters on ice, and staples like a burger, roast chicken, steak au poivre, and even a lobster roll. The look will match the menu, meaning blue-colored leather booths, lots of wood and glass, and a raw bar visible from most of the room.

Stressed and unhealthy birds don’t produce as many eggs. The location of your duck house is paramount for keeping ducks safe and healthy and maximizing egg production. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a location for your duck house. There are a couple of ways to build a pallet duck house. You can take the pallets apart and use the boards for siding.

More importantly, it needs to be strong enough to keep predators out. Some cities also have ordinances for duck and chicken keeping. There may be minimum requirements for duck coop space. Oftentimes each bird must have at least 3-4 square feet of indoor space by law. To keep ducks, you’ll need a minimum of 10 square feet of space per duck. Ideally, each duck should have square feet of space.

White House Design: Layout, Design, and Interesting Facts

The South Lawn features over three dozen commemorative trees that date back to the 1870s. During the Kennedy administration, Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon redesigned the White House gardens, including the famed Rose Garden outside the West Wing. The East Garden, also redesigned by Mellon, was later named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy.

James Hoben, an architect born in Ireland, was responsible for the White House’s design, which is in the neoclassical style. Its original construction took place between the years 1792 and 1800, but since that time, there have been various renovations to it, particularly during World War II, when the White House was set on fire. It was redesigned by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to serve as a Presidential reception area. Today, the home of America's president has six floors, seven staircases, 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, 28 fireplaces, 147 windows, 412 doors and 3 elevators. James Hoban was brought in to rebuild it according to the original design, but this time the sandstone walls were coated with lime-based whitewash.

The building underwent major structural changes in the early 1900s under Teddy Roosevelt, who also officially established the “White House” moniker, and again under Harry Truman after WWII. Counting the Oval Office and the Rose Garden among its famous features, it remains the only private residence of a head of state open free of charge to the public. The Blue RoomArchitect James Hoban’s 1792 plan for the White House included three stacked oval rooms in the center of the building that form a projecting bow on the south side. This room was known by its shape - "Elliptical", "Oval", or "Circular" - until the color was changed to blue in 1837 under Martin Van Buren and a new name emerged.

Built at a cost of $232,372, the two-story house was not quite completed when John Adams and Abigail Adams became the first residents on November 1, 1800. "Suicide affects everyone. It doesn't matter your age, race or gender," Emhoff said. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff shared the grim numbers of the growing public health crisis. A tactical alert allows LAPD to keep officers on past their shifts and to move officers between divisions if they need extra staffing in one area of the city. The student protests -- some of which have turned into around-the-clock encampments -- have erupted throughout the nation following arrests and student removals at Columbia University in New York City. Students at schools including Yale University, New York University, Harvard University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Southern California and more have launched protests.

Called Government House, the architecture exhibited the neoclassical elements of the day — pediments, columns, and simple grandeur. The first president's plan was to move the capital to a more central piece of real estate, and so Washington began surveying swampland near his Mount Vernon home in Virginia. Between 1790 and 1800 the government moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as it built the young nation's capital in Washington, D.C.

Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, in 1909, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office, which was eventually moved and expanded. In the Executive Residence, the third floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. The East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space.

In this photo, because we are looking south, the West Wing is the building on the right side of the photo. Since 1902, the President has been able to walk from the Executive House, along the West Wing Colonnade, around the Rose Garden, to work in the Oval Office located in the West Wing. The East Wing on the left-side in this photo is where the First Lady has her offices. White House architecture is a story of how a building can be rebuilt, renovated, and expanded to fulfill the needs of the occupant — sometimes in spite of historic preservationists. The West Wing also houses the Situation Room, the Cabinet Room, the Press Room, and offices for advisors and the chief of staff.

This floor, with 16 rooms, a main corridor, and 6 bathrooms, is the primary family residence. It contains the president’s and his family’s bedrooms, a private living room, as well as some rooms for close guests. Accommodations for official guests are located in Blair House, across from the residence. In 1948, President Harry S Truman added a hotly debated balcony to the South Portico, on the second floor.

The basement was built during World War II and was mostly used as storage space for various pieces of machinery and equipment. It is home to the dental practitioner’s office with a medical clinic and storage spaces. Before 19th-century state dinners, the guests would be greeted by the President and his wife in the Red Room. Because the 1877 Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday, the oath was administered on Saturday evening with the public ceremonies at the Capital taking place the following Monday.

In addition to covering the walls with hand-painted striped wallpaper, President Obama added a new oval-shaped rug, which is made of 25% recycled wool. This rug features the Presidential Seal in the center and five historical quotations of meaning by Martin Luther King, Jr. and Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy around its border. Other notable furnishings in the Oval Office are the two paintings that flank the south windows. Early maps referred to the White House as the “President’s Palace,” but in 1810, the building was officially named “Executive Mansion” in order to avoid any connection to royalty. The residence has also been called “President’s House,” or “President’s Mansion.” In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt changed the official name to “White House,” a moniker that had been used throughout the 19th century. Each president adds their own personal style to the workspace, choosing artwork from the White House collection or borrowing from museums.

1993, the White House embarked on an extensive “greening” project aimed at reducing energy consumption. From 1873 to 1927, the White House received numerous architectural and decorative contributions. Despite architect Latrobe’s suggestions to rebuild it with a new design, its new occupant, President James Madison, decided to restore it and return it to its original appearance, under the supervision of the also original architect, James Hoban. The architect was chosen in a contest that received several proposals and was won by James Hoban.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy envisioned a restored White House that conveyed a sense of history through its decorative and fine arts. She sought to inspire Americans, especially children, to explore and engage with American history and its presidents. In 1961, the nonprofit, nonpartisan White House Historical Association was established to support her vision to preserve and share the Executive Mansion’s legacy for generations to come. Supported entirely by private resources, the Association’s mission is to assist in the preservation of the state and public rooms, fund acquisitions for the White House permanent collection, and educate the public on the history of the White House. Since its founding, the Association has given more than $115 million to the White House in fulfillment of its mission.

Although special meetings, luncheons, and dinners have been held in the room, it continues to be used for the purpose first intended - the formal reception room of the White House. It is here that the President and his wife often receive guests during receptions. The first Chinese delegation to present diplomatic credentials was received by President Rutherford B. Hayes in the Blue Room in 1878. Family events held here include the June 2, 1886 wedding of Grover Cleveland, the only President to marry in the White House. Since 1961 (excepting 1962 and 1969), the principal White House Christmas tree has been placed in the center of the room. In 1862, Willie Lincoln died in the White House of typhoid fever, and his grieving parents placed his open casket in the Green Room.

As was the case in many large homes, the domestic duties were carried out in the basement. America's presidential home has seen extensive remodeling inside and outside since these plans were presented. One of the most obvious changes happened during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson between 1801 and 1809. It was Jefferson who began to build the East and West Wings of the White House as service wings for a house growing in importance. Originally, plans for a "President's Palace" were developed by the French-born artist and engineer Pierre Charles L’Enfant.

They provide an air of majesty to the assembly hall thanks to their presence there. Since it was first constructed, the Map room has undergone many revisions. It had been the Steward’s Office at one point, but later it was transformed into a powder room exclusively for the women.

Yet another disaster struck in 1929 when a fire swept through the West Wing. Then, after World War II, the two main floors of the building were gutted and completely renovated. For most of his presidency, Harry Truman was not able to live in the house. The residence features a 42-seat movie theater and a tennis and basketball court. The White House bowling alley was given as a gift to President Truman and was later moved to the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Many an American president has battled for the privilege to live at the nation's most prestigious address. And, like the presidency itself, the home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Indeed, the elegant porticoed mansion we see today looks very different from the austere porch-less Georgian-style house designed over two hundred years ago. When President Harry S. Truman moved into the White House in 1945, he became concerned about the state of the building. In 1947, a chandelier in the Blue Room almost fell on Bess Truman and her guests from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and in 1948, the leg of Margaret Truman’s piano pierced through the floor of what is now the private dining room. Engineers confirmed that the building was at risk of collapse, and Truman and his family relocated to Blair House, the president’s guesthouse located nearby at 1651 Pennsylvania Ave.

The residence of the president of the United States is a large neoclassical federal-style mansion, with details echoing Greek classical architecture. The general layout of the White House grounds today is based on the 1935 design by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. of the Olmsted Brothers firm, commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Kennedy administration, the White House Rose Garden was redesigned by Rachel Lambert Mellon. Bordering the East Colonnade is the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, which was begun by Jacqueline Kennedy but completed after her husband's assassination. Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy (1961–63), directed a very extensive and historic redecoration of the house.

In June 2023, fighter jets moved to intercept a light aircraft that violated Washington DC airspace near the White House, before it crashed in Virginia.[108] All occupants in the intrusion aircraft were killed.

According to the White House Historical Association, the cost of construction was $232,372. Over the years, these have been replaced by concrete walls and steel beams. The pavilions, porticos, or columns supporting the entrance roof were added later. Except for the entrance hall, which ceiling is 5.80 meters high, and the east room at 6.10 meters, the rest of the ceilings rise to 5.50 meters.

Overseeing Tuesday’s panel and advocating for the administration’s federal action plan was Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris. Emhoff said the plan aims to reduce the country’s roughly 132 suicides a day. A newly released study by the Pew Research Center finds that 91% of people who voted for Biden last time and 94% of those who voted for Trump plan to vote for the same person this year.

After the completion of the structure, the porous sandstone walls were bleached using a mixture that included lime, casein, lead, and adhesive made from rice. It wasn’t until Hoban left Ireland and emigrated to America that he had a chance meeting with President George Washington in Charleston in 1791. The meeting led the American president to hire Hoban as the designer of the White House. “It was Hoban who convinced George Washington, a man with a passion for the countryside, of the attractiveness of the grand Irish country house as a model for the United States,” the anthology reads.

Although the building was often called the "White House," the name did not become official until 1902, when President Theodore Roosevelt adopted it. The second floor contains the private living apartments of the first family, as well as a kitchen. Some of these rooms are used for official entertaining, but most are reserved for private use.

LaGuardia Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall HOK

terminal b head house

The four-level Headhouse is the new main entrance for passengers traveling through LaGuardia Airport's Terminal B, featuring 60-foot-tall ceilings and a glass façade that fills the massive hall with natural light. The first floor is reserved for ground transportation arrivals, floor two houses the arrivals hall and baggage claim, with passenger check-in located on the third level, and concourse bridges, retail and restaurants reside on the fourth level. The Headhouse design allows airport customers and employees a seamless integration with the new west parking garage, new concourses, and the Central Hall, which is currently under construction and will connect to Terminal C.

Following the Headhouse opening day, the team will then complete the balance of the arrivals level construction under the temporary bridge by year end. The most recent milestone in the redevelopment was the completion of the Terminal B Eastern Concourse. The Eastern Concourse opened to the public in December 2018 and houses a total of 18 gates with modern customer amenities, state-of-the-art architecture, and more spacious gate areas. The second new concourse is currently under construction and will bring Terminal B’s overall capacity to 35 gates upon completion. The roadways in front of the headhouse frame the GCP, and its column structures align with the headhouse design to provide one cohesive visual. Inside the terminal, all check-in and passenger screening areas are located on the third floor.

Skanska and the design joint-venture HOK and WSP designed these bridges to span active aircraft taxi lanes underneath – frequent bottlenecks under the old airport design – which will improve aircraft taxi circulation and ultimately help reduce traveler delays. Once both terminals are completed, LaGuardia will be the first U.S. airport to feature two of these innovative pedestrian bridges. With the Terminal B redevelopment now complete, guests can enjoy a completely new experience. The new Terminal offers best-in-class retail, food, beverage, and amenities that more than doubled the number of offerings.

Redevelopment

For passengers, the bridges offer stunning panoramic views of Manhattan’s skyline and the surrounding boroughs. The form of the bridges embodies elegance within demanding constraints, giving travelers the feeling they’re part of the airport’s operations. Most importantly, the bridges offer a novel solution to a longstanding taxiway challenge at LaGuardia. The Arrivals and Departures Halls leading to each concourse were also connected by two pedestrian sky bridges spanning 482 ft long and 60ft above the ground. The design of these bridges adds an extra 2 miles of taxiway space to the airport, which makes room for an aircraft to pass underneath the bridges.

Facility houses passenger services and amenities, including airline check-in, baggage drop-off and pick-up, and security. The team designed a simplified circulation network comprising over eight miles of new roadway and 20 new bridges that provide a connection from the airport to the GCP and New York City. The roadways in front of the headhouse frame the GCP, and its column structures align with the headhouse design to provide one cohesive visual. The New LaGuardia Airport

Terminal B’s indoor green space is modeled after New York City’s urban pocket parks and includes lush landscaping and sculptural benches. Concourses feature ample seating with charging stations across all 35 gates, spacious and modern restrooms with floors that literally sparkle, and nursing rooms for mothers and infants. Arrivals and Departures Hall (headhouse) celebrates movement while conveying a strong civic presence in a city known for its remarkable architecture. In the spirit of grand transportation centers like New York’s celebrated Grand Central Terminal, the new Terminal B ushers in an ambitious new era of mobility and travel. I’m not sure if it is due to insufficient space or social distancing, but a packed house may see a lack of tables for passengers to dine comfortably at. Once through the maze, passengers find themselves in the main departure hall and food court, and this is where the phones really come out to take pictures.

LaGuardia Terminal B Headhouse surprises and delights

The original master plan provided for the new Terminal B’s design competition suggested a headhouse with traditional peninsular concourses extending into the airfield. The developer and design team instead had a bold vision of creating two island concourses accessed from the main terminal through two 450-foot-long, 65-foot-high pedestrian bridges. The comprehensive redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport represents one of the most significant airport redevelopment projects in the United States in more than 20 years. LaGuardia Airport is being transformed into a unified airport with new terminals, better transportation access, additional airside taxiways and best-in-class passenger amenities. These pedestrian overpasses provide an apt metaphor for New York, a city of islands and bridges.

The redevelopment at one of the nation’s busiest airports began in 2016 and is the largest public-private-partnership (P3) in U.S. aviation history and one of the most complex projects ever undertaken by Skanska. Through close collaboration with the Port Authority and other stakeholders, Skanska developed a multi-phase construction plan that allowed for the ground-up construction of a brand-new terminal on a small geographic footprint, all without disrupting operations of the existing facility. The efficient new infrastructure and layout will reduce the airport’s overall carbon footprint due to lower fuel demands from taxiing aircraft.

The bridge solution enabled contractors to build the new terminal over the top of the existing structure—a move that shaved almost two years off the construction schedule and minimized the impact to ongoing airport operations. Even at the peak of construction, Terminal B only had to shut down one of its 35 gates at a time. Servicing American Airlines, the seven new gates within the 250,000 square-foot, four-level, light-filled Western Concourse are now open to the public, one month ahead of schedule. Customers will experience soaring 55-foot high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for ample natural lighting, modern restrooms with carefully selected amenities, and an indoor park with benches, landscaping and trees. Walsh Construction is a part of The Walsh Group, a 122-year-old family-owned company providing design, build, finance, operation and activation services throughout the building, transportation and water markets. The Walsh Group operates as Walsh Construction, Archer Western and Walsh Canada across 20 regional offices and is consistently listed among the top U.S. contractors per Engineering News-Record (ENR).

The Walsh Group is currently ranked as the sixth largest airport builder in the U.S., according to ENR. The advanced techniques and modern technologies employed by the Skanska-Walsh team were crucial for the intricate execution of LaGuardia's Terminal B and Headhouse. The team developed the project phasing using a series of 3D and 4D – or time dependent – models that allowed the visualization of the future layout of the airport throughout the duration of the project. Project leaders were able to measure progress with 360-degree photography and laser scanning to keep pace with real-time construction updates, collaborate with subcontractors, and quickly resolve construction challenges across the complex project site. Beyond the Headhouse, new infrastructure will surround the airport with more than eight miles of new roadways, 17 new roadway bridges, almost two miles of new aircraft taxiway space and 16 fewer traffic lights.

Seven new gates have been opened in the LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Western Concourse (Concourse A North), the latest achievement towards the completion of the LaGuardia Airport Terminal B redevelopment. According to Rick Cotton, renovations are still in progress at other sections of the LaGuardia Airport. He mentioned that Terminal C is also undergoing construction work worth $4 billion and it’s expected to be completed by spring 2022. This challenged the widespread practice among airports of offering the most monumental spaces to departures while relegating low-ceilinged, basement-like zones to arrivals. At LaGuardia’s new Terminal B, incoming and outgoing passengers will share soaring, airy, grand-scaled sequences.

In coordination with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP), Delta Air Lines and partner firms, HOK developed a cohesive, overarching design worthy of one of the world’s great cities. There is also ample space on the other side of security for passengers to reorient themselves. After security, passengers travel up escalators into what is essentially a small duty free maze, albeit without the duty free benefit.

The Terminal B LaGuardia Airport project progressed in several phases over the years, and the construction involved the replacement of the original four-concourse facility with two new concourses, known as the Western and Eastern Concourses. The Headhouse contains Terminal B's baggage handling system, totaling over seven miles, roughly two miles of walkways, and 1,200 energy-reducing motors. Now that Terminal B is essentially complete, all the attention turns to Terminals C and D, home to Delta's LaGuardia hub. There, the airline is in the midst of a $3.9 billion project that will include a new headhouse connecting the two gate areas. Since then, the entirety of the Western Concourse has opened, along with the connecting pedestrian bridge and a new taxiway under the Eastern Concourse.

According to Richard Kennedy, President, and CEO, Skanska USA, they are thrilled to celebrate another significant milestone at LaGuardia Airport, the largest and one of the most complex projects in Skanska’s history. “Opening these gates ahead of schedule with an exceptional safety performance is a testament to the diligence and tireless dedication of our team, subcontractors, and partners—an exceptional feat in light of a global pandemic,” he said. The Terminal B Western Concourse is a near replica of the Eastern Concourse, which opened to the public in December 2018 and, by early 2021, will house a total of 18 gates with modern customer amenities, state-of-the-art architecture, and more spacious gate areas. After the Western Concourse completion, Skanska-Walsh will have delivered 35 new gates for the new Terminal B. The Western concourse of the Terminal B LaGuardia Airport project was launched in two phases. It also features passenger amenities such as a park area with benches and greenery, a play area for kids, and a seating area with many outlets for electronic devices.

LaGuardia Airport Opens New Terminal B Headhouse

Once completed this summer, the lounge will span more than 20,000 square feet, with room for over 350 passengers. The $1.6 billion modernization of Terminals 4 and 5 will include a unified departure hall and a new south concourse in Terminal 4 with additional space for hold rooms, concessions, restrooms and a bus gate that will serve both domestic and international traffic. LaGuardia Gateway Partners is composed of Vantage Airport Group, Skanska, Meridiam, and JLC Infrastructure for development and equity investment. Vantage Airport Group leads the redevelopment program and management of Terminal B with Skanska Walsh as the design-build joint venture and HOK and WSP for design. The new baggage handling system includes 55 mobile inspection tables, one of the largest deployments at a U.S. airport. The baggage handling system, which was designed with permanent magnetic motors, only moves when bags are in the system and goes into ‘sleep mode’ when not in use.

The final piece of the transformed LaGuardia Terminal B is now open

This milestone was celebrated recently at a ribbon-cutting event attended by the New York Governor Kathy Hochu, Mayor Eric Adams, the Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and other local officials. This pedestrian bridge marks the end of disruptions to the passenger journey in Terminal B. Now, all flyers, regardless of which airline they're flying, will exclusively pass through newly built infrastructure. LaGuardia Gateway Partners is composed of Vantage Airport Group, Skanska, Meridiam and JLC Infrastructure for development and equity investment. Vantage Airport Group leads the redevelopment program and management of Terminal B, with Skanska Walsh as the design-build joint venture and HOK and WSP for design. The new Terminal 3 concourse now features 11 gates, with additional concessions and retail outlets coming soon! The project remains on time and on budget, with two-thirds of the costs covered by private investment.

It also provides several retail components and dining options which include Shake Schack, NYC favorites FAO Schwarz, Irving Farm Coffee, and McNally Jackson Booksellers. The Skanska-Walsh team developed systems to reduce waste, recycle materials, and reduce the project's environmental impact. The team was able to recycle 21,604 tons of concrete during the initial parking garage demolition. "The new Headhouse is the flagship component to LaGuardia's new Terminal B, and Walsh Construction is proud to join our design and construction partners in unveiling the terminal's new front door," said Dan Walsh, co-chairman of Walsh Construction. Once complete, new taxiways and ramp areas will be paved, and the final jetbridges on the Western Concourse will be installed. This includes an expansion to the new American Airlines Admirals Club, a portion of which is still under construction.

To celebrate the occasion, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul attended a grand opening ceremony, along with officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the airport, and executives from LaGuardia Gateway Partners, which developed and built the new Terminal B. Now, the bridge soars high above the leaky ceilings, narrow hallways and long bathroom lines of yesteryear. In July 2018, Skanska opened its first new flyover roadway to LaGuardia from the Grand Central Parkway’s Eastbound Exit 7, the primary roadway or overpass for vehicles accessing the airport, which greatly improved traffic flow and congestion. Since 2006, Skanska has offered the Construction Management Building Blocks (CMBB) program designed to equip MWBE firms with tools and resources to become successful as MWBE contractors and pursue opportunities on major infrastructure projects like LaGuardia. To date, the program has provided 9,586 hours of training to 378 registered firms across the New York Metro Region. Between 2016 and 2018, Skanska-Walsh has offered three CMBB training programs built around opportunities on the LaGuardia redevelopment. In preparation for the overnight transition from old terminal to new terminal, roadway logistics require the deactivation and demolition of the old Central Terminal Building incoming flyover bridge to launch a 216 foot, two lane temporary bridge carrying vehicles into the arrivals level.

The steel-framed terminal, with its linear, precisely articulated, and dynamic form presents a modern, cohesive face to both the landside and airside. It replaces a disjointed patchwork of structures with one that closely follows the curves of the Grand Central Parkway (GCP) and the airport access roads. The new Headhouse is the central entry point for travelers flying out of Terminal B, with seamless integration to passenger concourses and gates, the new parking garage and the Central Hall that connects to Terminal C and the planned future AirTrain. A $546 million renovation project was completed in early 2019, including an expanded ticketing lobby, improved security screening checkpoints, enhanced seating with more charging stations and a new luxe United Club Terminal 7 Lounge. The new Terminal B baggage handling system stretches over seven miles, with approximately two miles of corresponding walkways, and powered by 1,200 individual motors designed to switch off when not in use to reduce energy consumption. The baggage claim system runs through the walls and the ceilings, a construction feat equivalent to building a rollercoaster in a closet.

The four-story, 850,000-square-foot facility houses passenger services and amenities, including airline check-in, baggage drop-off and pick-up, and security. The steel-framed terminal, with its linear, precisely articulated and dynamic form, presents a modern, cohesive face to both the landside and airside. It replaces a disjointed patchwork of structures with one that follows the curves of the Grand Central Parkway (GCP) and the airport access roads. Opening hours for passengers and personnel vary between terminals; persons are advised to check with their airline or employer. Skanska’s use of emerging technologies and other innovative tools have been critical in delivering a project of this scale and complexity.

The team designed a simplified and intuitive circulation network comprising over eight miles of new roadway and 20 new bridges that provide an effortless connection from the airport to the GCP and New York City. The construction phasing strategy enabled the continual operation of the existing airport while seamlessly shifting to the new infrastructure as construction was completed. LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall (aka headhouse) is a highly efficient yet adaptable terminal that completely transforms the passenger experience while paying homage to the architectural grandeur and individuality of New York City. The facility houses passenger services and amenities, including airline check-in, baggage drop-off and pick-up, and security. These enhancements are supplemented by extensive food, beverage, and retail options as well as a dynamic public art program.

LaGuardia’s new Terminal B is now attracting the interest of federal and state governments attempting to determine how to pay for desperately needed infrastructure projects. As Stewart Steeves, CEO of LaGuardia Gateway Partners, has stated, Terminal B’s redevelopment might also be the “most complex aviation project anywhere ever,” as the previous terminal remained fully operation during construction. With an Envision Platinum rating (the highest possible), the new Terminal B is the first project to earn recognition under v3 of the framework developed by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The Institute evaluated the project on criteria including traditional factors such as reducing emissions, recycling materials, and conserving energy and water. It also looked at more holistic indicators of social and economic sustainability such as minimizing construction impacts, providing employment opportunities for residents, resilient design, and improving mobility and access.

The ongoing $5.1 billion ($4.7 billion construction value) Terminal B project is the largest public-private partnership in U.S. aviation history. Instead of providing rigid parameters for each airline tenant, the design employs common-use technology that allows carriers to easily expand or shrink their footprints. American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and Air Canada share four check-in islands with staffed ticket counters, 105 self-service kiosks, a central bag drop and nine baggage claim carousels. The design and operations respond to climate change threats such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events.

It consists of precast bulb-tee beams spanning to cast-in-place concrete piers and multi-span continuous steel girder bridges with one- and two-level roadway structures. The construction phasing strategy enabled continual operation of the existing airport while seamlessly shifting to the new infrastructure as construction was completed. WSP designed the roadway network to accommodate current and future transportation demands, evolving transportation mode shifts and accessibility in a constrained landside environment. The Arrivals and Departures Hall acts as the terminal’s front door, with dramatic pedestrian bridges that link to midfield concourses and gates. A new parking garage and a Central Hall connect the building to Terminal C and a planned future AirTrain LGA station.
